Restaurants and Eateries

Maxine's on Shine
Address: 337 N. Shine Ave., Orlando, 32803
Cuisine: American
Description: In operation for more than a decade, Maxine and Kirt Earhart's Colonialtown charmer is everyone's favorite neighborhood hangout. Crowds spill out in front during the weekend for brunch, thanks to a host of comforting dishes that soothe and satisfy. Think plates of fried green tomatoes, flaky crab cakes and of course, chicken and waffles. Dinner follows suit with such familiar yet flavorful dishes as a half-pound burger, or skillet lasagna, which is available with roasted vegetables instead of beef.
There are good vibes all round. The décor is eclectic and bears a whimsical slant by way of bold colors, lots of artwork, a dark, sultry bar, as well as tightly packed tables. Interior accommodations are supplemented by ample outdoor seating.

Kaya
Address: 618 N. Thornton Ave., Orlando, 32803, USA
Cuisine: $$$$ · Filipino
Description: Kaya occupies a small bungalow-style building in the Mills 50 district. Inside, there's a quirky charm along with views of the open kitchen. Diners enjoy a tasting menu served in multiple courses, some with more than one element. Expect a modern spin on classic Filipino dishes with local seafood and central Florida produce taking center stage. Kinilaw na isada, a ceviche-style dish with madai and finely diced fruit in a vinegar sauce is a stunning dish that wakes up the palate for a strong start. Then, the menu changes often, but you may enjoy kare, a rectangle of braised fork-tender oxtail resting in the classic and flavorful peanut stew/sauce, along with various vegetables. It's served with their pitch-perfect garlic rice, served classic or with a luxe update with King crab.

Zaru
Address: 1114 E. Colonial Dr., Orlando, 32803, USA
Cuisine: $$ · Japanese, Udon
Description: This sleek, Mills 50 eatery is located in the same strip as the Tien Hung Market. With an upbeat playlist and an attractive dining room, the restaurant specializes in chewy noodles made from wheat sourced from Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture. Ikura, tempura and top-notch ingredients like Hokkaido uni and A5 Kagoshima wagyu pair with broths of wonderful smokiness and depth. Starters like tatsuta-age (fried chicken) and yaki gyoza (pork dumplings) are familiar and reliable, but consider opting for the ikura onsen, which features a softly poached egg crowned with crispy garlic. Either way, expect precision and intentionality across the board by the team that’s happy to guide you.

Tori Tori
Address: 720 N. Mills Ave., Orlando, 32803, USA
Cuisine: $$ · Japanese
Description: Founded by Sean “Sonny” Nguyen, this Mills District concept is a classic izakaya offering bar bites, yakitori, as well as sake and creative libations. Unlike its sibling (Domu), this menu is varied and the trendy space is especially cutting-edge. Its name is painted on the side of the building and there's parking behind the restaurant. If that doesn't draw crowds from afar, the eclectic vibe and focused dishes certainly will. Start with skewers before moving on to grilled lamb chops, elevated with a mint-yogurt sauce, cherry tomatoes and diced cucumbers. A mound of fragrant fried rice may then show up mixed with sweet crab, notes of savory garlic and lemon essence.
Reservations are not accepted, so arrive early or risk waiting in line.

Edoboy
Address: 728 N. Thornton Ave., Orlando, 32803, USA
Cuisine: $$$ · Sushi
Description: From the same team behind Tori Tori and Domu, this casual concept delivers something sleek and simple—a standing sushi counter. It's not a gimmick, it's designed to be fast and fun, and it's a perfect place to bring friends. Be sure to arrive promptly, since you're given a set time slot and you'll be whisked into the space at the start of yours. Once there you'll select a dozen pieces from the selection of nigiri, seared nigiri and hand rolls. Some of the best bites include a sweet Hokkaido scallop finished with briny uni from Tasmania; seared sea bream with uni butter, lemon and sea salt; and spicy Faroe Island salmon with edo sauce, cucumber and fried garlic rolled in crispy nori. Dinner is rounded out with miso soup made in house from the bones and trimmings of the day.
